Emancipation Day Underground Freedom Train Ride
Commemorate the historic abolition of slavery in the British Empire from July 31st – August 1st with a powerful and symbolic journey.
The Emancipation Day “Underground Freedom Train” Ride represents the Underground Railroad’s role in Canadian history. More than just a train ride, it is a celebration of resilience, freedom, and the enduring strength of African-descended communities.
Since 2013, Blackhurst Cultural Centre has partnered with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to offer a unique experience—an underground subway ride symbolizing the journey undertaken by those seeking freedom. This event bridges history, the present, and the future, keeping the legacy alive. Beginning on the evening of July 31st, attendees travel from Union station north on the Yonge subway line to welcome in August 1st.
Open to the public, the ride may feature poetry, music, networking, and special activities. The route runs from Union Station to Sheppard West Station, with easy departure access at the end.
